Beaches
Crystal blue waters and peerless fine sand shores are part of Mykonos’ charm, along with the meltemi, the dry north wind of the Aegean. Find your place in the sun and seaside entertainment on one of our many golden beaches.
Good times on Mykonos can be as highly charged or as deliciously mellow as you like. This Myconian golden rule also applies to the island’s spectacular beaches that attract a cosmopolitan crowd; a variety of coves and broader bays with the sparkling blue waters of the Aegean. Couples, celebrities, families, party animals and all those longing for a break from the round-the-clock buzz of the island will find a beach to their taste. Depending on the wind or your mood, head towards the south of the island where Elia and Platis Gialos are sheltered from the meltemi. Choose a less developed and calmer beach along the north coast to avoid the crowds, or join the all-day summer party, opting for beaches such as Paranga or Super Paradise. We have categorized them so that you can take your pick:
For Solitary Souls and Bohemians
ELIA… exotic deep waters and rocky surroundings make this small bay a great alternative for sport aficionados (it’s a fabled spot for diving and snorkeling) and true Mykonos insiders who seek impeccable service and comforts without the distraction of loud music (and crowds). Families, couples and celebrities who arrive here by car or by boat are also attracted by the picturesque local restaurants.
AGIOS SOSTIS… unspoiled, without any tourist amenities, this beach encapsulates the bohemian soul of Mykonos. Frequented by celebrities and nudists, it is famed for its cold waters and laid-back ambience. A popular rustic tavern on the cliff serves up a feast of chargrilled fish and fresh salads. Beware: no reservations, no exceptions!
FOKOS… isolated and remote, with arguably the island’s coldest waters, this horseshoe-shaped beach off the beaten track in the north of the island, near the artificial lake of Marathi, remains a pristine site of natural beauty. Lacking umbrellas, sunbeds or any kind of shelter in general, the beach is at its best only on calm summer days. Sample the hearty grilled meats and delicious dishes on offer at the traditional tavern.
FTELIA… taking a right turn at the first crossroads after Chora, the intrepid explorer discovers an ideal surfing destination in a desert-like landscape exposed to strong northern winds. This is where a super-fit crowd along with locals and artists hangs out, either taking on the wilder surf or relaxing on beach cushions.
For Families and Comfort Lovers
ELIA… renowned for the longest strip of fine sand and its crystal waters, the serene Elia has comfortable sunbeds, a variety of superb restaurants with Mediterranean dishes and cocktails, as well as an aqua-sports school that offers water-skiing, parasailing and windsurfing. On this idyllic seashore, the Utopia Relais & Châteaux, trend-setting Avaton, luxurious Myconian Villa Collection, as well as the Imperial and Royal resorts, offer a private beach section with sunbeds and umbrellas for their guests, as well as a beach bar service for beverages, smoothies and snacks.
PLATIS GIALOS… a popular beach, one of the longest on Mykonos, famous for its crystal-clear water and fine sand. Its idyllic calm belies its proximity to Chora, and Platis Gialos has become both a family favourite and a cosmopolitan beach. It is fully organised, offering sunbeds, umbrellas, water sports facilities and many restaurants and bars.
ORNOS… boasting fine sand, sunbeds, umbrellas and sea sports, this is an ideal family beach fronting a small fishing village, with amenities and a good anchorage for yachts.
KALO LIVADI… a popular long beach known for its facilities and parties. With safe, shallow waters and idyllic surrounds, it is well-organised with many umbrellas and sundecks. Families choose it for the clear waters, quiet atmosphere and the variety of eateries.
AGHIA ANNA… calm, authentic and small, with few umbrellas and a local tavern.
For Jet-Setters & Networkers
PANORMOS… a well-known secret on the island, the definition of hip and chic. A once secluded, completely natural spot, Panormos has rapidly become a busy point of reference for the sophisticated fun-loving beach-goers, displaying a wide array of pop-up stores and contemporary eateries.
PSAROU… cosmopolitan haven with its beau monde and super-yachts at anchor. Beautiful, organised and sandy beach, with clear waters and sports facilities. Make sure you reserve in advance during high season.
SUPER PARADISE… if you don’t mind the party crowds and the loud music in most parts of the beach, Super Paradise is a magical shore of exquisite turquoise waters and fine sand that has ‘nurtured’ generations of teenagers with frenzied fun.
PARAGA… thanks to its favourable leeward orientation, picturesque Paranga guarantees warm days from May to October, attracting jet-setters with a taste for the bohemian style. Diving off the rock located out to the sea is a must!
